Teacher Feature: Charly Williams!

This month I introduce the world (well my 2000 ish readers) to the queens (and kings) of #fitspo.

As part of a new series called "Teacher Features," I've decided to highlight the best instructors. As a proud American, I thought I'd start with one bad a$$ lady from my nation's capital and former home: DC.

This is a woman who kicked my ass, pushed me, and believed in me; better yet, she does just that for each and everyone of her other students to create strong legs, arms, abs and minds.

Today I start with [solidcore]'s Charly Williams!

CHARLY WILLIAMS: DIRECTOR OF STUDIO OPERATIONS & GROWTH [SOLIDCORE]

Charly started coaching with [solidcore] in February, 2015 and is a special instructor for many reasons. I'm not just talking about the epic HP tattoo she rocks or the fact that she's also a lululemon ambassador (goals). When Charly first started training with [solidcore] her eyes LIT up when she talked about it; she clearly believed (and still believes) in the workout.

Charly is also a yoga teacher which means she has body awareness. Why does that matter if [solidcore] isn't yoga? Because she will ensure your workout is safe (think alignment/posture/modifications) and that each exercise targets the correct muscle groups.

You may hate (it's more of a love hate) her in the 50 minutes you're on "Sweatlana," (oh yes, the reformer has a name), but you and your perfect peach will thank her later.

Scout's honor.

What is [solidcore] you may ask? Only the closest thing to legal torture out there. I'm kidding...kind of. [solidcore] is one of the best workouts I have ever done. Think pilates on a machine that uses colored springs to add resistance to movement. I truly felt strong, toned and pushed when I hit [solidcore] on the reg. I actually believed that if I did it consistently, I would have visible abs. VISIBLE ABS- the dream! With [solidcore] there is no plateau.

Hi James...also, this is a reformer.

So why did a yoga instructor decide to step off the mat and up on a reformer? Charly notes:

"I thought I was in decent shape before my first class. Boy was I wrong! I had never been so sore in my entire life. I felt like I was dying for a week afterwards and hated the workout. At first. It was addictive. I wanted to be good (better) at it. The slow movements coupled with the accountability of teammates and coach ensure that there is little ‘cheating’ that you can get away with. Working until second stage muscle failure ensures you are break down muscle fibers efficiently in each class so that the recovery has the biggest bang for your buck (figuratively and literally)!"

Boom.

Enjoy the #tbt photo below of my first [solidcore] class with Charly, during which I distinctly remember Charly state, "if you feel like you're being stabbed in the side, you are doing it right."

I'm sorry, what?

Jan will always be flyer than all of us.

Look, [solidcore] is intense and the class is designed to push one's limits, attack and build slow-twitch muscles. Your legs will look like an earth quake and that's OK! You will experience the [solidcore] sneeze and second day soreness. What does that even mean? Take Charly's class and find out!

I promise you Charly drops some of the hottest beatz, ratchet raps, and best throwbacks to get you through class. Her favorite move right now is a seated chest fly with a crunch. AKA Michelle Obama arms here you come!

Michelle Obama goes to [solidcore].

[solidcore] is offering 5% off to anyone in ANY region who reads this and takes his or her first class.

So how does one prep for a class just described as the hardest class ever? Charly says:

"Cry into your pillow…JK just bring a buddy and be prepared to feel like you suck at the workout for awhile. It takes time to build strength and muscle memory!"

True that. But she also recommends athletes eat something small at least 30 minutes before class to avoid nausea and light-headedness.

She's a gem. Follow her on Instagram (@charlybobarly). Take her class at [solidcore]. And in the words of the reformer master herself:

"Don't ever forget how strong you are."
